The Braves’ shortest home run of the season came in their fourth game. Travis d’Arnaud got enough of this 99 mph fastball from Reds rookie Hunter Greene and landed it on the bricks in right. This moonshot, which did eventually land in Coors Field's third deck, didn't just give Yelich sole possession of the No. 3 spot on this list -- it also topped his previous career best by 37 feet. The event did happen more than 34 years ago, so it's hard to fault Tennyson for not remembering exactly how he got the number 582. Not being a fan of baseball, he also said he was just focused on getting an exact measurement and not taking home run history into consideration at all. He wasn't trying to "memorialize it." He did say a University of Colorado professor called him shortly after the measurements came out and agreed with how he came up with the distance.
Judge helped play a part in that win, hitting a long home run to open the scoring in the second of the two games. First off, it must be stated that Kingman hit this one all the way out while playing at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
However, he’d never post a better batting average (.313), on-base percentage (.425), slugging percentage (.659), or wRC+ in his career. There have been 10 different seasons with a player producing at least 12.0 fWAR in baseball history. He’s the only player not named Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, or Rogers Hornsby to be on this list. And yes, his 73 homers are an outlier since he never hit more than 49 in any other season. But it’s not like he wasn’t already a prolific home run hitter. This performance came in the midst of a 14-year span where he hit at least 33 homers per season.
Even with the short porch in right field at the Old Yankee Stadium, Maris essentially split his homer production down the middle. But still, his production was head-and-shoulders above anything he did before as a pro ballplayer. Just looking at his progression from 1997 to 1998 is eye-opening.
This was also accompanied by a 30.4% strikeout rate and a .226 batting average. The speedy center fielder got traded at midseason, but he hit the team's longest home run in the non-Yordan Alvarez category, hitting this blast in Arizona in the first week of the season. Aaron Judge has put together possibly one of the most dominant contract years ever, and it’s been one of the most powerful displays we’ve seen in quite a while. The last time someone hit this many homers in a season, it was Judge’s teammate, Giancarlo Stanton, in 2017 when he hit 59 dingers. So, I knew Sosa had an incredible prime, but it was really incredible.
The one thing we can be sure of, though, is it went as high as it did far. This moonshot doesn’t just earn the honors of being the longest home run of the 2022 season. It’s also the second-longest home run of the Statcast era, which dates back to 2015.
